 With the July 27 National election coming nearer the number of corruption stories found with a clear connection to the upcoming election showed a sharp increase in March. Needless to say that many of these stories are politically motivated and do not necessarily reveal facts on corruption-related crimes by politicians. Overall in the more than 3,000 stories on corruption monitored since November 2007, it is rare to find a story where perpetrator(s) are identified by name. In the 80% of the stories in which perpetrators could be identified many are only noted by category of people: the top 5 perpetrators are identified as: lower and high ranking officials, businessmen, the police and the army. The police account for 10% of the stories in which perpetrators were identified, and are the focus of this month’s highlighted stories (page 2). The author of an opinion (page 3) feels oddly sorry for a forestry official who does not get his share in bribes earned.
