Yemen: ARTICLE 19 condemns the decision to sentence the prominent editor Al-Khaiwani to six years in prison

ARTICLE 19 is deeply concerned by the Yemeni State Security Court’s verdict sentencing editor in chief of Al Shoura, Abdelkarim Al-Khaiwani, to six years in prison.

 

“We are saddened by the decision to imprison Mr. Al-Khaiwani. We believe the verdict may be politically motivated and call on the apellate courts to allow an appeal of this verdict and guarantee a fair trial”, said Dr. Agnès Callamard, ARTICLE 19 Executive Director.

ARTICLE 19 is deeply concerned over the Yemeni authorities’ decision this week to​​ cancel the licenses of three independent newspapers, the English-language weekly Yemen Observer; the independent weekly tabloid Rai al-A’am and the privately owned weekly tabloid Al-Hurriya (Freedom), in an apparent move against the newspapers’ decisions to reproduce the controversial Danish cartoons.

WASHINGTON D.C., December 3, 2008 — The World Bank Group today approved a US$20 million grant for the Demand for Good Governance (DFGG) Project in Cambodia to help enhance citizens’ engagement in development and governance processes, and government responsiveness to their demands.
